Short insight on
lighting the Menorah: When the rabbis of the Talmud instructed the
Jewish people to light Hanukkah Menorahs (Chanukiah) for eight days, it was
primarily for the purpose of pirsumei nisa, publicizing the miracle that
occurred on Hanukkah. Therefore, maximum exposure is the goal. Ideally, the
menorah should be placed outside by the front door facing the mezuzah. If that
is not practical, then the menorah should be placed by a window that can be
easily seen by passersby on the street or sidewalk. If that is not possible or
practical then the menorah should be lit in the room of the house where most
people congregate. Whether candles or oil with wicks are used, the flames should
last at least thirty minutes and be lit as soon as three stars appear in the
sky.
The
Menorah has been a Jewish symbol for centuries, it is customary to see a Menorah
along with other Judaic artifacts as a symbol of a Jewish home.
